Any subject has some value, but since no school can teach everything, they should focus on priorities.
Learning how to speak French maybe fun and may even have some real value if one travels to France or other French speaking countries, but since English is the International Language other languages are not priorities. History, Science, and Math are huge subjects that one can study forever. Obviously some basic parts of those subjects should be considered a priority and taught at a pre-college level, but many abstract topics like Trigonometry and Calculus can be saved for college focuses.
No matter what one does, the ability to define goals and focus work is crucial. While schools are labeling record numbers of students as "mentally disordered" (ADD) because those students are unable to focus, the schools are spending virtually no time teaching those kids how to focus. Since goal setting is an undeniably crucial skill, more important than most of the stuff taught in schools, an entire subject, "goal setting" should be introduced.
The excuse that schools dont have enough time is not a valid excuse since they spend so much time teaching less important subjects. Also, if schools themselves were more focused and goal oriented, they would be able to find the time. The real reason schools dont teach goal setting is because the people in charge of schools dont know how to set goals themselves. Rather than admit to their lack of goal setting instructions, schools have choose to label unfocused kids as mentally disordered.
