Common feedback response: "I just read 2 sentences of your site and I already know that you are an idiot. Do some research before opening your mouth." Why is it that my opinion needs more study, but this person feels empowered to express his/her admittedly uneducated opinion about me? Deciding when one has reached a proper level of research is a very subjective decision. If you think I need more research, then throw facts at me. Don’t just tell me to go read a book. If you have something to say, say it! If your only point is to tell me that I am stupid or need to read more, then I will just assume that you don’t have the guts or ability to express opinions yourself.
Conversation is much more involved than the single goal of saying what is "right". Something that is true today probably will not be true tomorrow. My opinions may be wrong today, but become correct in the future. Other opinions may be clearly wrong now, but made sense when they were written. Many essays, even if incorrect can be valuable by inspiring new ideas or by helping the reader look at an issue from a new point of view. Also, I can learn from feedback and comments on essays regardless of how "right" they are.
