Most Tuxedoes are rented for about $50. The renter gets some old over-worn black suit made from inexpensive material. Some people actually buy their tuxedo and rarely pay more then they would have paid for an average suit. Have you ever met anyone who owns a tuxedo who hasn’t bragged about the great price they paid?
But more important than price and material is the message that the clothes you wear send out. A tuxedo says, "I look exactly like everyone else at this party." When people complement each other at a tuxedo parties, it is like telling someone who has the same shirt as you, "Gee your shirt looks great!" Everyone says tuxedoes look great because it is too difficult to insult anyone who is wearing the same thing as everyone else.
The mentality behind supporting tuxedoes is the same mentality which allowed slavery in the 1800’s and Nazi’s in the 30’s to thrive. A situation that is clearly ridiculous is supported because the risk of going against the grain is much greater than ease of being a follower. Trying to look like everyone else protects the individual from harsh criticism even when that criticism is well deserved.
