First of all, if you want to make a lot of money, start your own business. Otherwise you are destined to a meager salary. If you don’t like the salary you get, then look around for another company that pays better. If you can’t find a better job, then look at the job you do. Maybe your skills are not worth that much.
UPS drivers drive trucks and carry boxes. Although the job is important, those are not skills that are in short supply. In fact, millions of people are qualified to drive a truck and move boxes. To get higher pay, UPS drivers should be working on getting new skills for a new industry or work and wait to climb the corporate ladder at UPS.
The Teamsters are trying to make it so that more UPS part time employees will make more money by becoming full time employees. Although that will benefit some employees, it doesn’t benefit the company. UPS already pays higher than their non-union competition,. and more full time employees will make the company less flexible. Finally the union doesn’t seem the least bit concerned that their strike is hurting the company that pays their bills.
UPS is asking the Teamsters that UPS be allowed to set up their own employee pension plan which will benefit the UPS employees more than the current Teamster’s pension plan. The Teamsters have a pension plan that pays employees at various poorly run union companies and uses UPS employee’s money to help fund pensions at those other companies. Since the Teamsters have destroyed most of the companies they represent, they need UPS money to support employees at their other member companies.
The Teamsters represent employees at hundreds of old extremely inefficient financially weak companies. Rather than help strengthen those companies, the Teamsters are content because their employees are overpaid. Instead they focus their energy on hurting their number one most successful company, UPS. Attacking the successful UPS, while sitting back with over paid employees at unsuccessful companies is a strategy that dooms the Teamsters to a continued decline in influence.
