Everyone has some stress in their lower back and neck. Relaxing those stressed muscles requires the you to take the time to focus on relaxing those muscles. The acupuncturist, masseuse, and chiropractor all help the patient focus on those stress points and then give the patient time to focus on relaxing those muscles. For example, the needles that an acupuncturist sticks in you really don’t do anything, but when you lay there for an hour focusing on relaxing the areas where the pins are inserted, you end up relieving the stress yourself.
All a chiropractor does is crack the patient’s joints, which is something anyone can learn to do themselves. By visiting the chiropractor you end up discussing where your stress points are and the doctor twists and contorts your back a bit allowing you to feel your degrees of flexibility. Then the effect of cracking is largely psychological. Although the cracking doesn’t really do anything, the fantasy that it does help act as motivation for the patient to feel better and relax themselves around the places that were cracked.
Massage is nothing more than someone applying pressure to muscles. Once again the masseuse does not need to be a genius or terribly skilled. By applying pressure and motion to all areas of the body, the patient is able to discover muscles that are tightened or sore that might otherwise be ignored. Also, the pleasure from being felt all around makes it easy for the person to just lay still and relax for an hour.
The acupuncturist, masseuse, and chiropractor do administer positive effects, but not because their methods are magical or require great skill. They work because they help the patient become aware of points of pressure that need to be relaxed, and act as motivation to get the patient to actually take the time to mentally let go of the stress.
