Analysis: The Bible’s Ten Commandments

Commandment 1: You shall have no other gods but me

This law doesn’t mean much because everyone has a different image of God in their head. Since "me" is not defined, there is no way to determine whether anyone is or isn’t obeying this commandment.

Commandment 2: You shall not take the name of your Lord in vain

This law contradicts today’s spirit of free speech. One would think that the ruler of the universe would have more important concerns than whether or not people are using his name as a swear word.

Commandment 3: You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.

God wants to make sure that people take one day a week to think about him, thank him, and follow his rules aggressively. This is quite an egocentric command especially since working to help others on the Sabbath day would often be considered unholy.

Commandment 4: Honor your father and mother

This is a nice rule.

Commandment 5: You shall not kill

If this law refers to humans then no one can disagree with this except for cases of self defense, but if it refers to animals and plants also, then the law is a bit extreme.

Commandment 6: You shall not commit adultery

Some married couples have arrangements in their marriage where they agree to invite in and have sex with other partners. Creative sexual agreements within marriages may be difficult to manage, but I admire those who have successfully done it.

Commandment 7: You shall not steal

Agree 100% with this one

Commandment 8: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

Apparently this means that you shouldn’t lie about your neighbors. I am not sure why this only refers to neighbors; I would say you should never lie at all.

Commandment 9: You shall not covet your neighbor's goods

There is nothing wrong with wanting or admiring things that your neighbor has. Admiring your neighbor’s goods can act as motivation for you to work hard to get those same admirable goods yourself. It is however unhealthy to be overly consumed by those desires.

Commandment 10: You shall not covet your neighbor's wife

God seems a bit preoccupied with these "thought crimes". If your neighbor’s husband or wife is beautiful, there is nothing wrong with feeling attracted. It is however unhealthy to be overly consumed by those desires.
