If you want to "help people," don’t join the gov. Start a business.

When it comes to helping the underprivileged, don’t look to the government. The most efficient way to have the biggest effect is to take 10-20 years to make millions of dollars, then use that money to build an organization to help whomever you want. There is no way any government job will let anyone help as many people as you can by building your own organization.

The main way the government helps people is by taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Not only does much of that money get lost during the transition from rich to poor, but government programs are usually big, unorganized, and impersonal. Also, history has shown that often government programs don’t solve the problems they seek to solve. For example, the war on poverty over 20 years saw poverty increase! How could any government program be more efficient than creating money yourself and pouring it along with your energy into a cause you feel strongly about?

Despite government waste and ineffectiveness, many young people strive to go into government to "help people." Of course the government does some good and many jobs are important, but the idea that the government helps more people than private businesses is ludicrous. Look around you: The computer in front of you, the chair you are sitting on, the building you are in, and the food you ate last were all made for you by private profitable companies. What has the benevolent government done for you lately?

Unfortunately most government jobs are really a waste of money for the tax payer. If the government employee was really concerned about achieving results, they would not work for the government; they would start their own business, make millions, and use their own money, creativity, and effort to save the world.
