Anyone can get at least 11.9 cents per minute anywhere in the US 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Just go to the news group "alt.business.misc" and you will see companies advertising.
ATT, MCI, and Sprint all charge significantly higher rates and often more confusing programs. Their business plan is to spend money to trick customers into their inferior programs and hope the customer over pays by more than the company spent on the advertising scam.
All three companies telemarketing tactics vary from extremely stupid to downright scary. Recently I cashed a $100 check to switch my fax line to ATT, and once I got my bill, I promptly switched my line back. A few weeks later I got another $100 check for switching my internet line which Never calls long distance. After cashing the check, I promptly switched that line back also.
I later got a call from MCI who offered me 10 cents a minute anywhere in the US 24/7. I agreed to switch my line, but when my first enormous bill came, it was for 25 cents per minute. After complaining, they reduced past bills to the rate I had been promised, but sent me on my way unless I wanted to continue at outrageously high rates.
When I got a call a few weeks later from a guy from ATT promising me 10 cents per minute, I knew their had to be a catch. The sales rep rushed the close, I signed on, but decided to call back and check my rate. Sure enough, the deal was, "10 per minute, but only for six months when the rate would jump to 25 cents per minute." Since I am not looking for short term deals on my business line, I was not interested and felt swindled.
The sales rep had told me I could reach him at 800 222 0300, but when I called, they said that he was not at that line and there was no way I could reach the telemarketing department from that line. In fact, my complaint about this sales rep who is clearly using lies to sell would not be tracked down. All they would do for me is enter my complaint into a general complaint file and send me a general apology letter within 3-5 weeks.
If you are using ATT, MCI, or Sprint, search the net or news groups for a small long distance company . You should be able to find at least 11.9 cents anywhere in the US 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 11.9 cents on incoming 800 lines, low international rates, and 19 cents per minute on calling cards with no surcharge. If you dump ATT, MCI, or Sprint, not only will you get better rates, you won’t have to worry as much about getting ripped off!
