Generation Xers are labeled "cynical" primarily for their views on business, politics, and marriage.
Many GenXers don’t believe in lifetime employment and even question the idea of working for someone else. We’ve seen the layoffs and the poor slobs who’ve worked their ass off for their whole life with little savings or wealth to show for it. 75% of all GenXers plan on someday having their own business so that they won’t have to depend on someone else and suffer the same fate as many in the older generation. Big corporate executives call that attitude cynical, I call it business smarts.
Many GenXers don’t believe anything politicians say, don’t feel attached to either party, and tend to avoid politics as a whole. Almost every president in every debate since 1972 has promised to lower taxes and balance the budget, yet taxes and the debt have risen steadily since the 70’s. They have borrowed our money to build systems that will collapse before we even get near benefiting from them. The politicians call us cynical because we’d rather watch MTV than the Presidential Debate Lie-Fest; I call it a better use of time.
GenXers look at marriage carefully and do not quickly blurt out vows after High School and are examining different relationship models instead of the traditional marriage. We’ve seen divorce jump to one in three couples and are taking a hard look before leaping into lifetime commitments. Some call this careful eye on love cynical, I say it will breed stronger relationships.
GenXers are criticized for questioning or abandoning traditional business, political, and marriage models. We question these models not out of negativity, but from our positive motivation to create a better life.
