People who think they need lots of sleep wake up in the morning, calculate how much they slept, and then decide whether or not the day will be a disaster. If the first thing you tell yourself upon waking up is that you will not be able to make it through the day properly, then your problem is not lack of sleep, it is a negative attitude.
Anyone can program themselves to sleep only 5 or 6 hours per day; all you need is a little practice. If your body is used to 8 hours per day, then you probably aren’t sleeping deeply. Your first few nights sleeping only six hours may not be sufficient, but your body will figure it out and start sleeping deeper in less than a week.
If you only get 1-4 hours of sleep, you may be in trouble, but the difference between 6 and 8 hours is negligible. Those who claim they absolutely need 8 hours aren’t giving themselves a chance. Upon waking up, rather than saying, "This day is gonna suck," Say, "I am excited to get up and do stuff." Then if the day gets lame and you get drowsy, remember how you get drowsy even when you get lots of sleep. Drowsiness is usually the result of boredom rather than lack of sleep. Next time you get tired, don’t take a nap. Instead set some goals to make your life more exciting and look forward to a deep six hour sleep that night.
A move from 8 hours per day to 6 hours per day adds 14 hours of productivity per week. That’s almost an extra day to do things for people who don’t believe in the I need Eight Hours of Sleep MYTH.
