Another possible scenario is that someone who lusted after Mary actually impregnated her against her will. Both her and her aggressor would have had great incentive to hide such a horrible situation. As a result, both widely promoted the idea of the child being from God in order to prevent further investigation and to promote Mary’s pure reputation.
We may never know who impregnated Mary, but the scenarios just presented are infinitely more likely than her having sperm magically implanted into her by some mythical deity.
