Cartoon with Mohammed having a bomb for a turban

Muslims around the world were in an uproar over a cartoon that showed Mohammed with a lit bomb on his head in the shape of a traditional turban.

There are two main reasons for the outrage against the cartoon. First of all, some claimed it is against Islam to portray the Prophet Muhammad, or any pictures of what God might look like. Unfortunately, for the protestors, that claim is not correct. There are many pictures of Mohammed including some in important museums in the Arab world. Further, the restriction of Muhammad’s pictures flies in the face of freedom of speech which is now a the law spreading rapidly around the world. If someone says or draws something you don’t like, argue against it, but you can’t just go and kill the messenger.

Many Muslims are also upset that the image seems to paint mohammed himself as a terrorist. Yet, in the news we see Islamists everyday claiming to do work for mohammed by strapping bombs to their own body and blowing themselves up. The jihad philosophy seems to be saying that for the gift of heaven or for the good of destroying infidels, mohammed would in fact volunteer to blow up his own head!

Even if this is image is not what Mohammed is really about, Muslims should be concerned that the violent Islamist movement is creating this image. Rather than chanting “Death to Denmark”, the protestors should be chanting “stop the terrorists who blow themselves up in the name of Mohammed”.

The blame for this cartoon is being placed on the person who drew it, but the real creators of the cartoon are the extremists who use Mohammed’s message to foster terrorism and suicide. In the long run, this cartoon will probably help many see clearly how terrorism is the real culprit in defaming Mohammed, and the artist who drew the picture should be congratulated for so clearly capturing this sad state of affairs in the Islamist community.
