God and Horoscopes Defy logicwritten - 08/22/2005 When discussing opinions and making arguments, all we have is logic. Logic defines the rules of discussion which basically say that in order to make a point, you need to provide sufficient facts. If there is insufficient evidence to support a theory, then you should not believe or argue for that theory. And if you want to refute someone’s opinion, you either need to discount their supporting facts, or provide a theory of your own which have even better or stronger supporting facts. Nothing can be proven 100% because you can always ask another question. Thus, we can’t believe things because we “know” they are correct; all we can do is make a best guess. Many people claim to believe things because they “feel” it is correct or they often admit that they think that way because it makes them feel good. For example believing that horoscopes (planets affecting our behavior) or even the existence of god have no supporting facts. Yet people believe in them despite the lack of logical support. It is not OK to believe in things without using logic because without logic we are thinking randomly. In fact, if logic is not important, then why not believe that the universe is a Giant Sneeze and we must fear the coming of the Great Handkerchief? There is just as much evidence to support the Sneeze Handkerchief theory as there is evidence that distant planets effect our behavior or that a mythical god created the universe.
