The most important day of my life

written - 10/24/2005

Is there such a thing as “the most important day of your life”? Some days are certainly more important than others. The day you decide to accept a job offer is more important than a day you lay in bed all day with a hangover, but what day is the “most important”? That phrase is often used by women to describe their wedding, but a wedding is just a party! Maybe the day the groom decided in his head who he wants to marry was the most important, or the day the bride decided she wants to spend the rest of her life with that man, but most people don’t even remember exactly what day that was. Even most wedding proposals are decided “yes” before the actual proposal is made; thus reducing the significance of that moment. Nevertheless, the day they both formally declare to get married is clearly an important event. Then six months later, a party to celebrate hardly compares in comparison. But the most important thing of all is how the couple acts and what they do to build a life together. Just as the day a baby is conceived is a big day, but how that child is cared for during its daily life will certainly have the biggest impact of all.

Similarly, many students describe their graduation day from college as “most important”, but the day they decided to accept an offer to attend that college could have been even more significant. However, the day a student decides to attend or the day they graduate is less important than what the student does day after day while enrolled. Many kids fret long and hard about which school to attend , but it is not the school that is chosen that makes or breaks someone’s life, it is what they do and how hard they work at the school that has the greatest impact.

The idea itself that one day can be such a big deal plays into an incorrect concept that life is made of lucky breaks or one great event that changes everything. Of course, some people win the lottery, and that would probably be the most important day of someone’s life, but 99% of the population builds their lives by doing little by little everyday until that work accumulates over many years into something important. Even a big important decision that is made incorrectly can be wiped into insignificance if someone counteracts that bad day with lots of good little days.

So to answer my question . . . what is the most important day of your life? I don’t know, and you probably don’t know either, but who cares? The question is what is the most important life you have? That answer is your life, and you should make the most of it. Some days are better than others, but it is the thousands of regular days in between that are the most important of all.
