Save day light all year long

written - 11/14/2005

Day Light savings time originally started during WWI when the government decided to move the clocks back one hour during the summer to give more sunlight later in the day to save energy. Now that is a great idea! But why move it back in the winter?

Decades ago, people used to get up earlier, but even then, most people appreciate sun later in the day more than the morning. In the morning most of us are working and doing chores inside. And even if we are outside in the morning, since it is our most productive time, we are less appreciative about a beautiful sunny day than we would be later in the day after we are done working.

If the purpose is to save energy, look at it this way: If the sun rises at 8AM some people may use or enjoy that sunlight, but many people who are still sleeping until then will not. But sun that stays up until 6PM instead of 5PM will be appreciated by almost everyone as almost everyone is awake at that time! And many people are actually done working and can not only “use” the sun, but can enjoy it as well.

Every fall many people complain about daylight savings time change. But really we aren’t complaining about daylight savings time, we are complaining about moving the clocks back to old non-savings time. Next summer we should move the clocks ahead to save daylight and then just keep it there for good!
